Mary Alice Gandy is widely recognized as one of the oldest people in the world to vote for the very first time. The harsh realities she faced growing up in the deep, segregated South contributed heavily to the time lapse. Mrs. Mary Alice Gandy decided to vote for the first time at the age of 106 years old. Gandy spent a lot of time with his grandmother, who died at age 108 in 2009. He decided to write a book about her to inspire young and old to believe that their votes really do count. When Gandy learned that Barack Obama, an African-American, was running for President of the United States as the Democratic Party nominee, it was enough to inspire her to vote. Born in 1902, Mary Alice Gandy decided that she wanted to be part of history, Sen. Barack Obama’s bid to become the first African-American president. Gandy, 106, took advantage of the Early Voting period for the 2008 Presidential Election and voted for the first time in her life.
